Comments
Caption, "Meeting in the African Church, Cincinnati, Ohio"; preacher exhorting his congregation. This identical image appeared six years later in Ballou's Pictorial (Sept. 24, 1859; p. 208), with the caption, "sunday meeting of colored people at Chicago" (see image reference Ballou17-208 on this website). Although depicting free people of African descent, a similar scene might have taken place in urban areas of some of the slave states.
