Dixon Denham, Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa, in the years 1822, 1823, and 1824 (London, 1826), facing p. 46. (Copy in Special Collections, University of Virginia Library)

Comments
Based on a sketch done in the field by Denham, this engraving shows two women and their clothing styles. Captioned "Kanemboo [Kanem] market woman" [left], "unmarried woman of Soudan" [right], the women are shown with [metal?] and bead jewellry and carrying on their heads calabash and pottery containers. (Thanks to Wendy Wilson for her assistance.)
