Sultan on horseback, returning to Sokoto after a slave expedition, accompanied by entourage on camels and horses. This picture accompanies an article on the American edition of Henry Barth's Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa (Philadelphia, 1859). Barth encountered the sultan accompanied by a group of Arabs on a slave expedition.
