Comments
The marabout, as a devout Muslim, is shown doing one of his five daily prayers. The small vessel in the left-hand corner of the picture is a "satala," containing water for washing himself before and after prayer (p. 17). In the background is the fort at St. Louis, flying the French flag. Boilat made his drawings from life; his 24 plates are explained in an accompanying text.
