Comments
Captioned "A Slave Auction," shows an enslaved mother and her daughter on the auction block; another enslaved mother with infant waiting to be sold; white onlookers and white auctioneer. An artist's fabrication embedded in a discussion of the events preceding the Civil War. The illustration itself is not discussed. Sometimes reproduced in modern works, without citation to an original source and giving the erroneous impression that this is an eye-witness illustration.
