Comments
The caption under this illustration reads, "the choicest pieces of her cargo were sold at auction..." This auction scene, as it was imagined by the well-known American artist Howard Pyle (1853-1911), accompanies an article, "The New York Slave-Traders"(pp. 293-303). The date 1643 is shown on the building behind the auctioneer's block and modern publishers sometimes assume that that this indicates the date of the illustration.
