Field gang of men and women "covering the seed"; white overseer on horseback; tin pan on stake on right is to scare crows from eating the seed. Crows consider cotton seed "a great delicacy," and the "common method of keeping them away . . . is suspending a tin pan between high stakes, which is beaten by a stone swinging on a cord" (HW, p. 346).
